The solid granite Matobo Hills started forming over 2 billion years ago – and gradual erosion continues to shape and reshape them. A botanist’s dream, this small national park hosts over 200 tree species, 100 species of grass, and a number of rare, endemic plants. Game is relatively sparse, but does include rhino, sable, and leopard.
As part of a wider safari, Matobo offers an interesting and relaxing diversion to an area of great historical interest, both ancient and recent, with over 300 rock painting sites and Cecil Rhodes’s grave. This park pairs especially well with Gonarezhou and / or Hwange.
